Free Speech
The evidence is overwhelming that freedom of speech and the First Amendment are under attack. Free speech means the ability to express who we are as much as what we think and believe. Speaking is essential to thinking which is essential to being. This is so basic, but I strongly feel the need to mention that the core of the First Amendment protects unpopular speech.
The trend to abridge "offensive" ideas results in restricting certain speech and opinions. Thought and reason, however, are not servants of the culture. We should promote tolerance, patience and forgiveness rather than rely on Orwellian speech and thought policing from disagreeable ideas. "If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear." ~George Orwell.
Pandering to hurt feelings rooted in insecurity complexes only exacerbates distorted thinking about the world. We do not forfeit freedom of expression because someone finds our ideas objectionable.
